Can alder be coppiced

Coppiced shrubs resprout in the rainy season and regrow branches in a year. When shrubs become scarce, women pull branches from adult trees, sometimes using long-handled hooks. This harms the growth potential of a tree by removing shoot apical meristem tissues and can yield thorny branches that are difficult to handle. The Italian Alder makes a medium to large bonsai, a quick grower it responds well to pruning with branches ramifying well and leaf size reducing quite rapidly.

The only time you must not coppice is late in the summer Aug-Sep. Several species of trees can tolerate coppicing, however, the best species for coppice forestry will be determined by the specific conditions of your area.

Black Locust: Another nitrogen fixing tree species, black locust is some of the hardest wood available which is excellent as a fuel source. A typical hedge will contain a variety of trees, only some of which are suitable for coppicing (e.g. hazel, sweet-chestnut, hornbeam, ash, alder, birch and willow).

Coppicing is a traditional method of woodland management, . by which young tree stems are cut down to a low level, or sometimes right down to the ground. In subsequent growth years, many new shoots will grow up, and after a number of years the cycle begins again and the coppiced tree or stool is ready to be harvested again. Typically a coppice woodland is harvested in sections, on a rotation.

All the above species, and also less light-demanding species (eg. oaks, Quercus spp.), can benefit from the use of rows of nurse trees.
